In this interview with DAYO OYEWO, newly elected President, Queen’s School Old Girls Association Worldwide, Dr. Yemisi Solanke-Koya, discusses her vision, priorities, and plans for the association

How do you feel about this new role of yours?

I want to give God the glory because, without Him, nothing is possible. I’m genuinely excited and passionate about the direction this role will take. I firmly believe in progress and that there is nothing a determined woman cannot accomplish. With the incredible talent we have on board, I am confident that we will not only surpass our previous achievements but also restore the values and standards of excellence we all look forward to seeing again.

What inspired you to take on this leadership position, and what do you hope to achieve during your tenure?

The inspiration came through a nomination. When I was approached by elders and my classmates, I had to seriously reflect on whether this was the right time in my life to commit to such a significant project. However, I reminded myself that when responsibility knocks, sometimes you must think beyond yourself. You have to step into the role of a public servant and contribute. People clearly saw potential in me, and I didn’t want to disappoint. I’m relying on the wisdom of the elders and the skills I’ve gathered throughout my life to serve in this capacity. By God’s grace, I will do my very best for the school and the association.

What fond memories do you have, and how has this school shaped you into the person you are today?

I have many fond memories. One that stands out is from the last day of term when we would clean our dormitories. At the time, we used Izal disinfectant, and the seniors, in their wisdom, would tell us that we couldn’t sleep in the dormitories because of the strong smell. So, we’d take our mattresses out onto the internal roads. Technically, we weren’t sleeping—we’d stay up with our lunch boxes, sharing leftover food, singing, laughing, and bonding. That night was always special, bringing us all closer during those final hours before leaving school. It’s a memory I cherish, and it inspires me to create that same sense of camaraderie for our girls today.
